Kollam

The district had major industrial units like ALIND, Quilon Seramics etc.

Kollam district (formerly Quilon) is one of the 14 districts of the state of Kerala, India. The district has a cross-section of Kerala's natural attributes; it is endowed with a long coastline, a major laccadive seaport and an inland lake (Ashtamudi Lake). The district has many water bodies. Kallada River is one among them. Kallada Boat race is one among the famous festival events of district. Even though it is a competition between two land sides of the river, many boat clubs from various places, even beyond the district, participate in the event. Kollam is the capital of Kerala's cashew industry. Plains, mountains, lakes, lagoons and backwaters, forests, farmland and rivers make up the topography of the district. The area had trading relationships with Phoenicia and Ancient Rome

      2. Industrial scenario of the district

Kollam district is moderately industrialised. Around 10,500 Industries are working in this district. Kollam has excelled well in export based industries like Cashew and Marine. At present, 6 large scale industries/public sector undertaking are working in Kollam District.

    • Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited, Sankaramangalam, Chavara
      Indian Rare Earth Limited, Chavara
      Kerala Feeds Ltd., Karunagapally.
      Kerala Oil Complex, Puthiyakavu, Karunagapally
      United Electricals Kerala, Pallimukku
Kerala Electrical & Allied Engineering Co.Ltd,Kunadara
  • The traditional industries are one of the major sectors, which give employment to lots of people in district. It comprises cashew, coir, handloom, khadi and village industries. Technological stagnation, high cost of production, labour shortage, and fierce competition are the main factors for the decline of these traditional industries.

Cashew Exporting has been the backbone of the economic prudence of kollam district. There was a time when industrial development of kollam was synonymous with the activities of cashew exporting companies. The companies gave huge returns through exports and It gave employment to a large number of household women and men. But, Due to some issues developed recently, this sector is now showing slowness. The new developments like the coming of an international ship with cashew to the neendakara port in kollam has given a ray of hope.

Marine Exporting is a flourishing industry now also in kollam district. Due to the presence of one of the biggest fishing harbours in asia, Shakthikulangara harbour and the nature gifted marine wealth, the sector is an evergreen sector in kollam district. A problem that the sector faces is the unavailablity of an exporting port. Even though Kollam Port is there, most of the exports from Kollam happen through Cochin port or Tuticorin port. The sector is growing at a pretty good rate even though there is challenges. Marine Processing industries are also being established throughout Coastal areas of Kollam.

    3. Industrial Potentiality of the district.

The District is immensely rich in mineral sources and is endowed with large deposits of beach sands containing ilmenite and monozite, clays, bauxite, graphite and laterite which offer scope of exploitation for industrial purpose.Rich concentrations of Ilmenite and monozite bearing sands are found at Chavara, Neendakara and Koilthottam in Kollam district. The mineral deposit of the Kollam Coast containing monozite is one of the richest in the world and are reported to have the highest content of Thorium. Ilmenite is used for the manufacture of synthetic rutile, titanium tetrachloride, titanium dioxide, pigment titanium salts, titanium metal, and alloys and for welding electrodes. It is a good source of titanium dioxide pigments and other titanium compounds. Leucorence is used for the manufacture of welding electrodes and titanium dioxide. Zircon is used in ceramic refractories and foundaries and for manufacture of zirconium metal which has important applications in nuclear technology. Sillomanite is used in high temperature refractories. Monozite is used in Rare Earths Industry and Nuclear Technology.

Clay is another industrial mineral abundantly available in the District. Large deposits of residual clays occur at Kundara. Deposits of China clay suitable for commercial exploitation have been located at Chathannur, Mulavana, Pallimukku, Kunnathur, Kaithacode and Kundara. It is estimated that 7.5 million tonnes of China clay is available per square mile in these places. Fire clay deposits were discovered in Padappakara, Kundara, Pallimon, Ambalathumbhagom and Vadakkumthala. It is estimated that there are 8 million tonnes of fire clay deposits which is yet to be exploited for commercial and industrial uses. Ball clay occurs on large quantities at Polachira and Padappakkara. It is estimated that there is a deposit of 1.3 million tonnes of ball clay in these areas.

The availability of quartz and felspar from the adjoining District of Tamil Nadu has encouraged the prospects of ceramic industry in the District. In order to exploit the potential availability of clay, a common facility service centre for ceramics has been set up at Kollam. Besides large deposits of China clay in Kundara, Mulavana and Chathannur, there are also lime shell deposits in Ashtamudi Lake and the Vembanad Lake. Bauxite deposits are available in Adichanalloor and disseminated graphite in Punalur. Gemstones were discovered in Kulathupuzha and mineral sands in Chavara and Kayamkulam. Mica is found at Punalur.

Abundance of natural resources, presence of traditional industries, thriving service industry based on Tourism potential, Existing and emerging IT infrastructure, Marked improvement in development investment climate, BPO earning centres, untapped renewable energy generation capacities, Agro based business potential, Food processing industry avenues in fisheries, Consumers backed with adequate purchasing power are positive factors of the district for industrial development.

Kollam or Quilon, an old sea port town on the Arabian coast, stands on the Ashtamudi lake. Kollam, the erstwhile Desinganadu, had a sustained commercial reputation from the days of the Phoenicians and the Romans. Fed by the Chinese trade, it was regarded by Ibn Batuta, as one of the five ports, which he had seen in the course of his travels during a period of twenty four years, in the 14th century. Histrorically Kollam has been the hub of large and medium public sector enterprises. There are many large and Medium scale industries in the district.
